WTF do I post on LinkedIn?!
Create stand-out content on LinkedIn and build inbound leads into your freelance business
“I know how to use LinkedIn, I just have nothing interesting to actually say on it.”
This was what my first ever coaching client said to me when we got on to the subject of using LinkedIn for business.
I resonate.
I’ve been posting on LinkedIn for a few years now and usually I don’t find the process of creating content all that difficult. But sometimes I get that feeling of what can I possibly say that hasn’t already been said.
But here’s the thing.
There’s only one you.
You’re the only one that has led the life you have. You’re career history is unique to you. Your business is different to other people’s. You have views and ideas and insights that won’t be the same as other creators on LinkedIn.
No need to dazzle
Lots of my clients feel the need to constantly be educating people or positioning themselves as a thought leader.
But remember, Linkedin is a social platform. We want to get to know the people, the business owners, the minds behind the work.
Just sharing snippets about your life, business, thoughts, ideas and insights is enough to engage with people.
We don’t need to dazzle all of the time.
I would imagine LinkedIn as though you’re walking into a room full of people.
Do you start spouting educational content? Do you start telling people how much your earn?
Probably not!
LinkedIn is about starting meaningful connections and relationships. It’s about building awareness of who you are and what you offer to your clients.
Simple stuff that is about you and your business is enough.
If you don’t believe me I posted a photo of my labrador holding a branch in his mouth a few weeks back, with the caption “it’s good to have ambition”. It got more likes than any “useful” stuff I post.
(Photo below in case you want to see it).
Post about stuff you care about
This is my top piece of simple advice. Post about stuff you care about.
Which bits of your work do you enjoy the most? What has happened to you recently that is important? Why do you freelance and what does it mean to you? What kind of clients make you happy.
There’s no point posting about stuff that bores you or that you aren’t interested in.
Does it actually work?
If you post regularly and consistently on LinkedIn, take the time to comment and engage with content and connect with new people then yes, you will get clients through LinkedIn (assuming your audience actually go on the platform). But it takes time!
Before someone is ready to work with you they need to know you, like you and trust you. This takes time!
To give you inight I just onboarded a new coaching client. She said she had been following me for 2 years on LinkedIn. 2 years!
It’s a long game. But worth it.
Content ideas
I have created a set of prompt cards that can be used for creating LinkedIn content. These are not templates or anything, but cards you can follow to make posts that will stand out.
I have poured 4+ years of knowledge into this, added tips and bonuses and added in tons of ideas to help people create content that works for LinkedIn.
